My name is Rodney Fielitz. I'm a certified flight instructor in Cottonwood, Arizona. I'm here to give you the basics on what it takes to become a pilot. As we come into a landing after we get ready to shut the airplane down and put it away. Again, we have a checklist that we use. Everything is on this checklist. It says stopping engine. First thing it tells you is retract your flaps, well I do that while I'm on the runway because with the wind, especially tailwind, it's pushing me down the runway farther than I want to be. So, we're coming, flaps retracted, electric fuel pump is off. Because when I come in for a landing my fuel pump is on. Air conditioner off, I turned all my radios off because I don't want them on when I try to start. Then your mixture idle cut off. That mixture idle cut off is your red button which cuts the fuel supply to your engine. One of the things that we have on the aircraft that cars don't is we can control the mixture. We can lean the mixture out as we're flying we get up to higher altitude we don't need to be running full rich. So we can lean our mixture and get better fuel economy. If we could do this on cars that would be a wonderful thing too. So the mixture idle cut off, that's what cuts the engine off, it starves the engine from fuel. Then I turn my mag?s off, which is my key, and the master switch which runs all the electronical. Now we're ready to put the airplane back in the hanger.
