"On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Rodney Fielitz. I'm a certified flight instructor in Cottonwood, Arizona. I'm here to give you the basics on what it takes to become a pilot. Again, on this side of the airplane we have another aileron. If you look inside the plane, it turns. We're looking for hinges and the screws missing. The aileron is what makes you turn. One goes up, one goes down. One creates life, one creates drag. So as it goes down it creates lift and then it raises the airplane wing up and that's when you're going to turn to the right. These are called your flaps. These flaps, the primary purpose of flaps is to increase your rate of decent without increase in your air speed. We use flaps primary for landings. Again we're looking for the hinges, we're looking for the control knobs that are on and to make sure all the bolts are there. We're looking at the side of the plane for dents or damage. My airplane sits in a hanger I don't have to worry about damage so much but when it sits out on a ramp you've got to worry about somebody that may have drove into it and not told you about it."
