"Back pain is an interesting thing to talk about with acupuncture. It’s something that bothers an awful lot of people and everybody knows that in the past back surgery is something to try to avoid. It’s had sort of an odd record, people notice that about fifty percent of the time they got back surgery they felt better and half the time they wouldn’t. Actually, about twenty years ago there were some early studies with the MRI technique looking at how reliable that was. They took a look at people who had back pain and people who didn’t have back pain. They were really surprised that with half the people with back pain there’s nothing physically wrong with they could find on the MRI and half the people without back pain had something physically wrong that should have been causing them pain. This really shows something. This shows that physical problems aren’t always related to pain. And that’s part of the reason why surgeries to take care of a physical problem didn’t work. In acupuncture we look at the fact that whenever there’s pain the body’s energy and blood flow is blocked and acupuncture helps relieve that and get moving again and when things get moving again there’s no pain. There’s no pain regardless of whether the physical problem is already completely take care of or just in the beginning stages of healing. People are already feeling better. This always people to get through the process of healing a herniated disc for instance. Herniated discs for the most part can heal themselves. Occasionally they’re an emergency but most of the time they’re not, and when they’re not most of the time people get surgery because they can’t bear to stand the pain for three months while it’s healing. I’ve helped a lot of people avoid the surgery through acupuncture. They were pain free through that period. "
