"Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. What we want to talk about now is when running the option play the quarterback is going to be one of our key focuses of the offense. If you have a fast enough and athletic enough quarterback you want this guy to run it as much as your tailback. But, he has to make the correct read. The first part of the option is he's going to drop step and fake it to our fullback. That's going to be important for this quarterback. He's going to ride it on through. He wants to ride that fullback through to let them think he's going to hand the ball off. Then he'll pop it out and run it down the line of scrimmage. He has to start making reads. He has to read the outside of the defense. (video demo) He has to make sure there's no penetration through here and make sure this defensive guy stays to his outside. Once the quarterback starts coming around, if that guy is to his outside where he can't pitch the ball then he has to tuck the ball and get it up the field as quickly as possible. We cannot have this quarterback continue to run to the outside because even though he keyed in on the running back all the defender has to do is change his direction and he can make the stop on the quarterback. So, the quarterback has to come off of him. Once he makes that decision he has to turn his shoulders up the field and get up the field as quickly as possible and pick up as much yardage as he possibly can."
