"Hi this is Sean Hobson for Expert Village. When playing cornerback, first of all we talked about having a really good stance, being athletic and being ready to be in the play. The second thing we talked about was starting out back pedal. Now, the other important thing is that's going to get you beat more times than not is if you don't use your hips to open up to the play. A lot of times you'll see a lot of guys who are covering, when this received comes past him they're going to take a wasted step right here and they're going to turn themselves all the way around and run. I just took three steps in one movement. The proper way to do this is when I start my back pedal and this guy comes past me, I want to simply just open my hips out and then the next step that I take is right with the receiver. That saves a lot of time, that helps with your balance and it keeps you from taking so many wasted steps in order to cover. So when opening my hips, when the receiver is going to the outside, I want to open my hips out with him like this. I open my hips out as he passes me. If he goes to the inside, I want to play my back pedal and then open my hips to the inside in order to cover him here. And that's just way that's going to keep you from getting beat off the line when playing cornerback."
