Hello and welcome to Expert Village. I'm Phillip Toriello from the Avila Bay Athletic Club. Open turns are a really great option for those who are just beginning to swim or for those who aren't in the competitive realm. I'll give a small example of this. If I were coming into the wall, swimming my freestyle, overarm or crawl stroke, I'd come into the wall, grab with both hands, pull my legs underneath my body, holding onto it, dropping my left shoulder, bringing my right arm over; grabbing the wall, pulling my legs underneath my body and then pushing off again. Again, this open turn style is really optimal for those who are just beginning to swim or maybe have some sort of physical impairment that doesn't allow them to do the flip turn, which is a more competitive turn in freestyle.
