Series Summary

Skiing has always been a relatively popular sport. It's fun, exciting and a great workout. As all things do, however, skiing evolved into other forms of powder transportation. Snowboarding is one of those offshoots. It became popular in the late 1970's and early 80's because of men like Dimitrije Milovich, Jake Burton and Tom Sims. They were just a few of the early snowboarding pioneers that took a then, hobby and turned it into the gigantic sport it is today. It was not until 1985 that it was officially declared a sport but as many would let it be known snowboarding was always in the hearts and minds of adventurers in the 70's.

Video Transcript

"Hi, my name is Matt Vansteenis and on behalf of Expert Village we're going to learn how to snowboard today at Cannonsburg Ski Resort in beautiful Grand Rapids, Michigan. In this segment we're going to show you how to properly rent some snowboard gear. So, we have Erica here at Cannonsburg, she's going to grab me some boots. I need some, I wear elevens. I need a size eleven. Some size eleven boots, oh, thank you. Got boots. Let's go get boards. So, with rental gear, you kind of just want to keep it, if you're a beginner, you want keep it a little below your chin, like right about chest level. If you're a little bit more advanced, you can go a little bit bigger. So, between your chin and your nose. So, I will need something a little bit taller. So, for your edge control, so if you get something too small, it's going to be all over the place, you're not going to be able to hold your edge. But, if you get it too big, it's going to be too controlling for you and you're going to be all over the place and not be able to stop when you need or you're going to go too fast and you're not going to be able to your edge. So, I'm going to need a snowboard that's going to fit me. I'm more of an advanced rider. Perfect my man, thank you. It's right up there about at my chin level, so we're good and, basically, just strap in, puts your boots on and just strap in like every other snowboard that's out there."
