"Hi! I'm Brenda F. Dixon. I’m a licensed clinical social worker. I'm licensed in Nashville, Tennessee. I'm licensed in Tennessee and in Kentucky. We're here with Expert Village today. We're talking about the different types of depression. I've already told you that there's major dysthymia, there's adjustment disorder, and there's bi-polar. Bi-polar is when people have mood swings of being manic or being depressive. Manic is they have really highs. For example, they might go on a shopping spree and just buy and buy and buy. They may be gamblers. They may gamble and spend money ferociously, and then the next day they may be depressed, so depressed that they can hardly even function. Bi-polar are extremes in the mood swings. I wanted to tell you just a little bit about the last type of depression. It's a seasonal depression where a person doesn’t have enough light that comes into their body, and so they actually get depressed. It's called seasonal affect. This type of depression can be altered by light and by certain techniques."
