Series Summary

Artistic drawings are drawings of any size or style penciled onto paper or canvas. A sketch is a freehand drawing that is not usually intended as a finished work. Historically, artists used a silver stylus on specialized paper called silverpoint to draw sketches. Artists can also use pen and ink or charcoal on regular paper to achieve the same look. Common tools used today for artistic drawings include graphite pencils, inked brushes, crayons, charcoals, pastels, markers or wax colored pencils. Sketchbooks are a popular medium for artistic drawing as well as different styles of paper. What the artist chooses to draw is ideally up to him or her. If you choose to draw a replication of something that is in front of you, such as a model, this is usually called a still life drawing. There are various other inspirations you can find for your drawings including memories or imagination.

In this series of expert videos, you will learn how to draw with art pencils. Expert Kristine Mueller shows you the various art supplies you'll need, including types of paper and erasers that are best for artistic pencil drawing. She shows you how to set up a still life to work from , and offers various tips on shading, blending, adding highlights and shadows, and how to avoid hand smudges when drawing.

"Hi, there my name is Kristine Mueller. Welcome to Expert Village and today I'm going to show you how to start drawing with pencils. Here is what you're going to need basically, you're going to get some pencils and I would go over which types in a little bit. You need some erasers, a smudging tool, your paper (get various different types), a paper towel, a drawing board and something for a still life. I've chosen some fruit which is great you can use anything you want I would suggest starting simple. If this is your first time in drawing, just make it easier on yourself. Of course, a nice table and some good light and that is pretty much it. You definitely want to also make sure that you cover your table like a nice piece of plastic, I usually like to use so let's get started."
