"Hi! This is Zach with Expert Village and today I am going to talk to you about burning DVD's and CD's and what to look for in the way of speed when burning. DVD media and CD media come in a lot of variable speeds. Some are very low end around 2X transfer speed which means that they can transfer data onto the DVD about 2 times what the normal rate of transfer would be. Some DVD's and CD's is going upwards of 32 times the normal transfer rate. In our system here, we have a 16X recordable DVD and the drive. We've dragged content onto the DVD and clicked the burn icon in finder. Now finder has prompted us with a dialog where we can label our DVD's and we can also pick how fast to burn it. Even though we put in a 16X DVD, the drive's maximum is only 8X and so it is limit to us 8X the normal transfer fee. There are advantages of burning a higher speed such as obviously the disk will be burned faster but there are also advantages of burning on slower speeds. If you've got another things to do on your system while you are burning the disk for instance watching a movie or playing video games, burning CD's and DVD's of high speed will eat a lot of your systems resources that you might want to use for other things. So putting it on a lower speed will help balance out how much of your system is being used for burning and how much is available for you to do other things. "
