"Hi! This is Zach with Expert Village and today we are going to talk about USB hard drives and USB external storage. USB is a standard that is found on most modern computers if not all. These are examples of USB connectors. Generally this is the end that you would plug into the peripheral device such as an external hard drive or printer. This is the end that you would plug into your computer. USB comes in two different varieties. There is USB and USB high speed also known as USB Version 2. USB Version 2 supports high data transfer rates as high as 480 megabytes per second while older versions support the most 12 megabytes per second. When you are deciding on choosing an external storage device based on USB, it is always best to look for something that is 2.0 compliant with the USB specification that way you can get the most transfer rate out of what you are buying. Some older computers might not support USB 2.0. In the event that you don't have a high speed USB port in your computer, you can purchase this additional expansion cards for your motherboard that will allow your computer to process USB 2.0 high speed transfers.
