"JOHN CARSTARPHEN: Hi, this is John Carstarphen for Expert Village. So shaders give you much more control over what you have: the bump surfaces, the color in the bricks and so forth. And you can see just by looking at it that the quality is much higher. Now, one problem with shaders when it comes to animation is that because they are created by software, shaders tend to react badly to animation sometimes, and that has to do with open GL settings and anti-aliasing settings and all kinds of things, which have to be tweaked when you're using a shader with animation. For still photographs, you don't have that problem, and we're just rendering still images here for the sake of illustration. But if we were to animate this camera across the shader, you'd see all kinds of noise and rippling and artifacts and so forth. And so you have to be careful with shaders, too. You have to get shaders that will work. That are designed to work with your 3-D program, that had been tested with your 3-D program. These particular shaders have been tested with Cinema 4D, but even still you have to tweak the--many of the parameters to get the shaders to look good in animation."
