"JOHN CARSTARPHEN: Hi, this is John Carstarphen for Expert Village. This is actually considered a shader. The difference between textures and shaders is actually quite complex because it has to do with lights and how surfaces appear and how light affects the surfaces and how surfaces are stretched over objects, and there's all kinds of math and algorithms involved. But essentially, it comes down to this: shaders are textures that are created in a software program, and they're called procedural shaders because of that. So the shaders are created one step at a time in a very specific procedure that allows you to create the texture step by step; whereas, a texture map is really just a photograph of a real-world object, and it can be manipulated and you can add a bump map to it and create some ridges and some realistic surfaces with it. But the fact is you aren't really going to change a whole lot because a photograph is a photograph, and what's been captured in photography can't be changed all that much."
