Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Tips & Warnings:
- Keep sessions short and fun.
- Use treats that your dog really likes.
- Always check with your vet before going there.
- If your dog seems too stressed out, cut the session short.
Step1
Call your vet' s office and make sure it's OK for you and your dog to stop in and do a quick visit in the front office. Ask what time is best and explain that you are conditioning your dog to like going to the vet's office.
Step2
When you arrive at the vet, walk into the front office and spend a few minutes giving your dog some treats. If your dog seems to be stressed, sit down and relax. Dogs are very sensitive to our moods and pick up on our feelings. Try to relax to get your dog to relax.
Step3
If you see your dog calming, give some more treats or pull out your dog's favorite toy. Spend a few minutes just playing with your dog and giving treats.
Step4
See if any of the staff has a minute to come over and give your dog a few treats. Please remember that they may be busy and respect their time.
Step5
After a few minutes, bring your dog to the car and go home. The trick to getting your dog to relax at the vet's office is to gradually condition your dog. This is done by just going there a few times and making it a pleasurable experience for your dog.
