"Hi! This is C.J. South representing expertvillage.com. In this clip, I am going to show you how to add clips to your time line and how to close gaps that may be between them. Okay, you've been patient. Now its time to start getting down to the editing portion. I'm going to show you how to hold clips from your browser now into your time line. So go to your browser. There are different ways that people accomplish this. Some ways are better than others just because they are more efficient than others. A common way that people start this is just clicking and dragging the entire clip right down into your time line which you can do. You can work with it in there but watch what happens when I drop it in. I now have a huge amount of video just sitting in my time line that I am going to half cut, squeeze, delete, crop and all that stuff and it is just going to get really cluttered in there. To avoid clutter go ahead and delete that. What we will is preedit it in the viewer so in your browser you can either click, drag and drop it in your viewer or you can just double click the clip and it will show up in the viewer. Now in the viewer you want to define a portion of your video that you are going to bring into time line because chances are you are not going to use the entire video all at once, the entire clip. So let's just take a portion. I want to see this building sweep right here. That's what I want to see so I am going to go to where I want to start and we are going to use in and out points. I on the keyboard is for in and o on the keyboard is for out; simple enough. So clip i; I just established my in point now. You can see there is a blue line in it that has like an arrow next to it that represents the in point and then I am going to go to, I want that clip to end, so it stops and cuts so I am going to end it just before that happens. I am going to click o for out point and again, you have a blue line with an arrow representing the out point. So now I have this portion of footage that I can individually take and place somewhere. So there are three ways you can do this. One way is to click, drag it and drop it right into the time line and boom, now you have a shorter clip of exactly what you want in your time line. Another way is to click, drag it over to the canvas and the canvas you have different options here for placing footage one of which is insert which inserts the footage. Now a third way is the quick keys and basically that is just using your keyboard to do commands. So while if you were selected that I hit F9 it would automatically insert my footage in there and I'll cover that later on. So let's say you bring in this clip, now let's bring in another clip another portion of that which is a little bit shorter. So I am going to put my in in my out point and I am going to drop it down. So now you want to play it. Okay, when this clip ends there is a big chunk of black space right in between these two clips. So how do you get rid of that. It is really simple. All you do is just click on that space and hit delete. Boom! Now the clips are right next to each other, back to back. "

on 3/19/2009 Hi Cj!I've been an Adobe Premiere 2.0 user until last year when I bought my iMac, I shifted to Final Cut Pro. Ever since I've had issues when rendering on FC. You see in the timeline of Adobe, you can preview your clips, edit them and when you're ok with the project then you render all clips at the same time. With FCP, it seems it's not the case or I'm probably missing out on something? I've tried the options on the toolbar, where you check options to render or not to render preview, proxy, full, unlimited but nothing seems to work. I get disappointed with this since it's affecting my productivity and it's even a simple cutaway of a movie that I'm trying to do. I've searched for answers on this but to no avail. What I want for FCP to do is to give me an option WHEN I WANT TO RENDER. Rendering every single clip dragged from the bin to the timeline is just robbing me alot of time.
