" Hi this is CJ South representing expertvillage.com. In this clip I'm going to show you the final cut pro log and capture window. Now we will begin the process of logging and capturing footage. So go up to file and come on down to log and capture. Okay now you get a error. Okay the reason that I showed this to you is because you might get this sometimes. Basically this is telling you there is nothing hooked up that final cut pro can read. Click okay. Now my camera is not turned on; that is why that came up. So go ahead, and if you haven't done so already, hook up your camera if you have one, and then turn it on. Now you want to turn it on, but you want to turn it on to the VTR/VTVCR mode. You don't want it on record mode, cause you want to view footage already on there, not record. You can do that, but we are not going to do that right now. So now you turned it on and you will still notice that it is not working yet. So you go ahead and close it. You go up to view now, and then take that all the way down to refresh AV devices. Anytime in final cut pro that the program is already open then you plug in the camera and turn it on, you have to go to view refresh and then it will read the camera. Now let's go back to file and log and capture. There it came up with no error. Now if you notice at the bottom of it here you have VTR, okay. Before it said no communication. This is basically your indicator if it is hooked up properly or not. Now if you do have some sort of device that doesn't use time code, like if you are trying to hook up a VCR, you are going to want to come to see, if you see these tabs up here, you are going to want to go to capture settings and you are going to go to non controllable device. What that does is basically tells it that I'm going to capture footage, but I can't control the time code. So again it will say no communication, but that is okay and I will cover that later on more in depth. Just go back to firewire NTC right now; that is going to hook up to your camera. Now let's take a closer look at these other tabs here. The logging tab, okay this tab is basically where you are going to set your name and your description for the clip that you are capturing and the reel, which is basically telling it which tape you are going to capture it on to. So this is where you are going to set all your parameters for saving. Next to that is clip settings. This is basically you are telling it if you want to record video or audio or neither or just one or the other. You are just going to toggle video, audio on and off here. There is also something called video scoops, but I will come back to that later. Again capture settings is just for the settings for what device you are capturing from; and then below it you have your scratch disk and you are telling it okay where I'm I going to capture to. This is the same preference that we set up before. So let's go ahead and cancel that out. Now to the left at the top you will notice total free space: okay that is the space that is free on your hard drive. Then to the right of that it is translation on how many minutes of digital video you can capture, and it is a 124 minutes. Obviously the more space, the more minutes you can capture. Now at the bottom you will see the control—these are the shuttle controls. "
