"DIXON GILLETTE: Welcome back to Expert Village, my name is Dixon Gillette and let's continue our tutorial on Microsoft Flight Simulator X. All right, we're going to talk about climbing. Airplanes will essentially climb when their thrust factor essentially exceed a given weight and an angle of attack of the wings. During a steady-state climb, the aircraft only climbs because its thrust-vector is outweighing its particular weight and angle of attack vectors. When you're actually in a climb, an aircraft's lift is slightly less than its weight; however, that thrust is producing so much thrust speed that it's essentially overcoming the weight factor. It's kinda similar to a child pulling a sled up a hill. An aircraft, however, will be able to maintain its climb as long as its thrust outweighs its weight and drag forces. So although it might be counterintuitive you're actually going to use your power settings on your aircraft to control up and down movement in your aircraft and use your yoke to only set airspeed adjustments. Of course, these concepts come into play when it's time to set your aircraft down on the runway. Here, you're not only going to use your yoke to point your aircraft at the desire target on the runway, but you're going to use your throttle settings to adjust your altitude and maintain a stabilized approach straight down to the runway."
