"Keeping your kids safe is an important aspect when you're thinking about leaving your kids home. Even when you are at home, some important safety factors to remember, to keep everyone safe, of course, is to lock the doors and windows. It's an alarming fact that, a lot of entries, illegal entries, are done because doors are left open, windows were left unlocked and it's really important to teach your children always lock the doors and windows. Now, if you are, have a child that is at an age where they can be left at home, it's even more important that they are already in the habit of locking their doors. Go over some of the general ideas or rules of the house that you want them to follow. Not answering the door when you're not home. Letting the answering machine or voice mail pick up on any phone calls that might come this way. When you're coming into the house to, make it a habit to do a quick little sweep around and make sure that everything looks normal and looks fine and then of course locking the door right behind you. If you have second floor bedrooms or other rooms that have window access, then you might consider putting rope ladders on the windows, so that regardless of what kind of an escape, it could be a fire or breaking and entering, that type of a thing. The child would have some form of escape besides their bedroom door. So keeping yourself safe at home would require you just to remember, lock your doors and your windows, do a sweeping look around as you enter in the house, teach your children how to follow the rules that you want for them to be safe at home. Show them where to find the phone numbers for emergency contacts. Neighbors, friends, people that they can trust. The people that you trust, if they were to need help and also go over the use of 911. How to use it and when to use it and always to help keep them safe at home."
