  1. Step 1

The problem with using treats to train is that many dog owners use the dry treats that their dogs eat everyday. This will not motivate some dogs. Dry food can also be difficult to train with because the dog has to chew it.

  2. Step 2

Teaching a dog obedience requires repetition; you have to do the commands many times for the dog to understand. In a training session you may have to do the same command over and over. If you give your dog a treat that is too big or too crunchy, it may take much longer to train.

  3. Step 3

The best treats to use are small and easy to eat. I use hot dogs to train because I can cut them up into very small pieces and most dogs love them. The trick to using hot dogs is to cut them up into very small chunks, just big enough to handle, but not so big that your dog gets filled up fast.

  4. Step 4

Cheese also makes a good treat, but tends to melt when the temperature is hot. Many pet stores carry different treats that are great for dog training. One of the best on the market is made by NutroMax. NutroMax training treats are small square treats that most dogs love to eat.

  5. Step 5

Whatever treat you decide to use will ultimately come down to what your dog likes best. In my experience I have found that most dogs do well with their training when the treats being used are small, easy to eat and are usually some type of meat product. A lot of the dog treats on the market today are made out of grain.
