Series Summary

We were crossing a crowded Williamsburg Bridge in a cab back to Brooklyn. I should have known this was a bad idea, but with a transit strike on and my very pregnant wife with me, a taxi was our only alternative. About an hour into our half-mile journey my wife's water broke. Of course, had I known about Expert Village, or even had a cell phone at that point I would have known exactly what to do. Instead, I panicked. Our taxi driver was the hero that day, and she was even featured on the evening news.

Everyone thinks they would know what to do in this scenario, that despite a total lack of medical training, some buried primal instinct will kick in and everything will be fine. But would you really know how to deliver a baby without any medical supplies or even any water? In this video clip, expert midwife Laurie Fremgen demonstrates exactly how to deliver a baby with nothing more than the shirt off your back in a taxi, an elevator or just about anywhere your phone can play video.

Video Transcript

" Hi! My name is Laurie Fremgen with Expert Village Mobile. I am a certified professional midwife. I deliver hundred’s of babies outside of the hospital and I am going to teach you how to deliver a baby in a taxi cab. There are two things to remember when you are delivering a baby. One is to remain calm and the other is to have something to cover the baby. You can use a towel and you can even use the shirt off your back. You will know that the baby is about to be born because you can see the head and the baby does not need much assistance and the birth will just take place and unfold by itself. The head slowly emerges and when the head is out, the baby will turn to one side or the other; just let the baby do that and gently assists the rest of the baby out. Cover the baby with your shirt or a towel and rub your baby. Most babies start crying right away but if yours doesn’t after about 30 seconds, you can pick the baby up and give it two gentle puffs of air, which looks like this and put the baby back on the mom. The baby should be crying. There is no need to cut the cord or do anything with the cord; just leave it. Get the baby and the mom situated and comfortable and take them to the hospital and that is how you deliver the baby in a taxi cab. Don’t forget to tip your driver. "
