A certified nurse-midwife is a registered nurse who has completed an educational program accredited by the American College of nurse midwives. There are recognized in all US states and territories of the United States. A licensed midwife on the other hand studies for 3-4 years in combination of course work and apprenticeship. They are certified on a state-by-state bases. For example, in the state of California, licensed midwives are licensed by the California Medial Board. "
