"Hi, this is Nicki with baby signs on behalf of Expert Village. And here we'll talk about some steps to success in signing with your baby. There's 10 steps to success that we talked about in the parent workshops and of course they're all important to me and I'll just give you a few of them to get you started. Number one is just start with a few. The point of baby signing is not to add stress to your life, it's just communicating with your baby, so just pick a few of the signs and words that you want to learn. You want to get into the habit of signing yourself, so maybe just pick one or two mealtime signs or a mealtime sign and a bedtime sign and teach those to your baby at first just to get into the habit. Secondly always use the sign and the word together. Signing is a bridge to speech and we like to say that signing is to talking as crawling is to walking. When the baby learns to crawl, it gets them more excited to walk and the same thing is true with signing. When they start signing, they're learning to communicate and it gets them more excited about in easier form of communication which is talking, of course you don't have to put your toys down to talk. So talking is absolutely the main goal. And third of all, one other step to success is to guide your baby's hands when possible. You never force your baby's hand but sometimes they might look to you for some guidance and I'm going to demonstrate to you using Bebo. Bebo is my baby in this case. So I would say, for instance if I wanted to teach him how to wave bye bye, I would say; Bebo look, grandma's leaving, bye bye Bebo and I'll be waving and making eye contact. Then if he looks to me a little confused, he might pick up his hand and not do it quiet right, I might pick up his hand and wave for him. Of course you can tell when your baby does not want to do that, so just stop. But a lot of times they'll let you do it for them. And those are just some steps on how to get started and some ways to get success in signing with your baby."
