"Then of course, there is Bill Martin Jr. who you cannot beat. This is the Chicka-Chicka One, Two, Three which was following his other book Chicka-Chicka ABC, Chicka-Chicka Boom, Boom Will There Be Enough Room. Lots of sequencing, “One told two and two told three I will race you to the top of the apple tree.” Wonderful books, great illustrations. Chicka-Chicka Boom, Boom 1-2-3, which is the sequel to Chicka-Chicka Boom, Boom ABC by Bill Martin Jr. and this one was illustrated by Michael Sampson and Lois Ehlert. Great illustrations, lots of good rhyme and lots of good repetition. Of course this is the ultimate book, Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you see? Every kid should have an experience to be able to read Brown Bear, Brown Bear; this one was illustrated by Eric Carl, which you can tell. “Brown bear, brown bear what do you see? I see a red bird looking at me.” Teaching Colors, wonderful. And then his sequel to that, Polar bear, Polar bear what do you hear? Teaching about animals, teaching about the sounds that they make. “Polar bear, polar bear what do you hear? I hear a lion roaring in my ear.” Lots of good interaction with that book. Another one of my favorite authors is Jan Brett; she does some of the most beautiful illustrations ever. She does a lot of books with animals and what I really love about her books is her illustrations tell a story around the edges and the borders of the pages. So while you are reading the story with your child, they are looking over here and they are making predictions of what is going to happen next in the book so it becomes a game. Beautiful illustrations and lots of details. This is The Wild Christmas Reindeer, this is Hedgie’s Surprise, and this is The Hat. She also wrote a version of The Mitten and Berlioz the Bear, beautiful books."
