"We are talking about today how to cultivate a love of reading in young children. And one of the ways that you can do that is picking some of the best children’s authors available and purchasing those books for your child or finding them at the library. I have many favorite children’s authors and I am just going to mention a few, I am sure that you have heard of a lot of them and maybe a few of them will be new. Something that I like to do with my kids is to talk about those authors, get their books, look for similarities, look for differences in different books, find similarities in their artwork, find similarities in their stories and find things that we like about those books. And that is just a fun way to cultivate that reading love. This is one of my favorites, Maurice Sendak and of course, this is Where the Wild Things Are, one of the classics, one of my kids’ favorites and it will continue to be classics for years to come. Where the Wild Things Are – Maurice Sendak. Another one of my favorite authors, Eric Carl and not only is his artwork amazing but the way that he designs his books, he is always teaching something along with teaching that rhyme and rhythm of language. A very hungry caterpillar teaches the days of the week. “Slowly, slowly, slowly” said the sloth, playing with that language, repetition and sounds is a wonderful way to teach that phonemic awareness and such beautiful illustrations. Today is Monday, pictures by Eric Carl this is another book that teaches the days of the week and he has got a wide variety of books, The Grouchy Ladybug, The Very Quiet Cricket. Wonderful, wonderful books they are all teaching other things besides the obvious teaching kids how read, they are teaching about insects, they are teaching about animals, they are teaching about days of days of the weeks, they are teaching counting skills, all kinds of wonderful things that you can get from Eric Carl’s books. Another one of my favorite authors is Margaret Wise Brown and she is an amazing author. Her books at first glance might not be the books that you might pick for your child, but believe me you want to. This is The Important book, I love The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown because it stimulates your child to start thinking about important things about themselves, important things about their family and it also gives a pattern to how you think about those important things. Descriptive words and all kinds of great things in this book, she also wrote Goodnight Moon, which is a must have for teeny kids. It was one of my kids’ favorites and we read it about 4 million times, I love Margaret Wise Brown."
