"As silly as it may sound to your child, the fact of the matter is, there actually is a right way and a wrong way to eat bread. And it's important that your child learn this from the get-go. You're going to have bread served pretty much at any--many dinners that you go to, whether they're in private homes, or restaurants, or even in your own home. And you want your child to know how they should proceed to eat bread. Obviously, the most important thing to teach your children is when they set down the basket with several pieces of bread, that they're not to go digging through the entire basket to pick out the exactly the right piece that they want. Instruct them to pick out whatever piece is on top and then to put it onto their bread plate, if there happens to be one. And the right way to eat bread is not picking it up in one piece and holding it up to your mouth and chewing bites off. It's actually breaking off a piece of bread and then eating them in small bites. So be sure to let your child know that. And if they want to use butter, they can go ahead and use the butter knife to cut off a little--a dab of butter and put it on their bread and put it on their bread plate. And then the butter knife has to go back to the butter dish so that the next person can go ahead and use it. Also, they should try to minimize the amount of crumbs that they are spreading on the table. Again, that's a good reason to have a napkin on your lap, that way they can catch any crumbs. But make sure that they're not flinging their bread around the table and creating crumbs all over the place. Just some simple rules to remember when you're eating bread at the table. "
