"Hi! I'm Karina Fraley for Expert Village and today I'm giving you some safety tips for child proofing and baby proofing your kitchen. Very important thing for you to remember is that children are very resourceful. Even if you have a young toddler, they can very quickly figure out how to pull things up to counters and lift themselves up to reach things that maybe can't even completely see. They might not be at eye level, however, their little hands can reach up and pull things down on them. One of the very important things to keep completely away from the reach of children are your knives. There are obviously many dangers with this. For one thing, if a child reaches up and grabs a hold of it somehow and starts to pull it down on themselves, this is very heavy. It's a wood block. If it hits a child on the head or on the foot, it could break a toe. It could obviously cause a head injury. Obviously, the dangers of a child reaching up and grabbing a knife are very great. You don't want to ever keep your knives close to the counter edge. Don't take it for granted if your child has just started to crawl. It's only a matter of time before they're just whipping around the kitchen and figuring out a way to pull themselves up and to reach up for things that you don't want them to be anywhere near. The best thing to do is keep your knives either completely out of reach of a child from the ground level, or maybe even go ahead and make some cabinet up in your higher cabinets and put them in there. It's a very simple thing, but you'd be surprised how many children are actually injured just this way every year."
