"DON VARNEY: Hi, I'm Don Varney, founder of Varney Speaks, and I'm here on behalf of Expert Village. The thrill of public speaking is always the start. So many people are just absolutely horrified and just scared of public speaking. It's considered one of the number one fears in the world today. There are people that would rather face a roaring tiger than stand on a stage and speak to a group of people. Fear and overcoming fear is done through preparation. The thing that makes a public speaker professional and confident is knowing their subject, knowing what they're going to speak about, understanding that they've spent the time in preparation, that they've taken the time to learn how to say what it is they're going to say. One of the things that I always tell students that I've taught over the years is that "don't think it, say it" if you want to be a public speaker. You've got to absolutely say it out loud so that you can hear yourself saying what you're thinking. Be prepared, study. Do your homework. Do your research. Get just into your topic and your subject. If you'll do that, I guarantee you that the opportunity for you to speak will stand in front of you on a day-to-day basis. It's a proven fact that if you're in school and you're studying that you should take a public speaking course. That you should take two or three. Take the opportunity to stand and speak at any given chance because it's proven that you'll make more money per year than a person who has a fear of public speaking. So if you're looking for a reason, hey, there's nothing wrong with making more money than the other person that won't do it."
