"Now we're going to talk about party safety. You can see that I'm holding my sword down. That applies to all sharp objects. Hide them away. Train the children to put their swords, if they've brought pirate swords to a pirate party, tell them to keep the points down, to be gentle with them. Balloons are lovely to decorate with and kids love them. And of course the lovely balloon animals if you're having an entertainer. But unfortunately, little pieces of balloon can be a hazard. Children can choke on them. So try to remember to pick up little pieces if you see them on the ground. Or ask one of your helpers to keep an eye out. Also, make sure that there are plenty of adults around for the number of children at the party. If your bathroom is a little away from the action, you might want to have a parent or a helper available to take children up and down to the room if they need it. Likewise in the kitchen. Make sure that someone is in the kitchen at all times so no children can pull the kitchen cupboards open. A little earlier on we talked about birthday party cakes and needing lighters and matches to light the candles with. When you've used them, make sure you put them away in a cupboard again, way out of reach of the children. Put things away in safe places. Move your china out of the way. Otherwise a child might drop something or knock something over and it's sharp and they might get cut. If you have a swimming pool, just allocate somebody to be at the pool all day long. Your party might not even be near the pool but it's just caution to have somebody there and it's one less worry for you. Remember, a safe party is a happy one."
