"Hi this is Cheryl with Expert Village. I’m going to show you how to open up a bottle of wine, using a waiter’s corkscrew. Now I know there’s a lot of fancy openers, there’s this one that looks like a rabbit and there’s a screw pull, but this I find is a great standard opener. It’s really easy to use. Now there’s a couple parts to the opener, there’s this side here that hinges out, we’re not going to use that first, and then on this side here you have a knife and what we’re going to do first, is we’re going to go ahead and take our bottle of wine so with this side here, the knife side open, we’re going to run our knife right along there’s this ridge, right along here and you’re just going to cut all around there and that cuts it. And then you just want to take this part of the wine, this part of the top off. Now we’re going to go ahead and open up the corkscrew part of the opener, now the trick with this is you want to make sure that when you put this on the cork, that you go right into the center of the cork and it has a little tip on that and you want to hit that right on the center and go ahead and start turning that in. And you want to make sure that when you’re doing this that you go in straight. If you go in at an angle, it can be a little trickier to open the wine up, but you’ll still do okay. Okay, now you’re down almost all the way and then what you want to do with this part, it has a hinge, you want to flip that up and rest it so that it’s sitting on the edge of the wine bottle. Now we’re ready to open it up. So with your hand you want to go in with one motion and you want to just go ahead and pull up. And there you go, that is opening a wine bottle perfectly using a waiter’s corkscrew. Thanks for watching, this is Cheryl with Expert Village. Cheers. "

on 8/2/2008 To make a suggestion to those who are learning how to open wine, try not to open the bottle in the air. Cheryl Dent is moving the bottle around too much. So by placing it on a table it will help keep the bottle still. This will prevent sediments from stirring. Also keep in mind some wines need to be decanted while others don’t.
