How to Play Charades

"Hi, I'm Teri Lynne and I'm here on behalf of Expert Village. In this segment we're going to be playing the game charades. Now there are many different versions and was to play it. I'm just going to show you one way to do it. This is a great guessing game. I like to play it with teams. It's really fun to play with a big group. You split into two teams. I'm going to go over the basic rules. I like to do one minute per round. If someone has a time watch that has a seconds hand, you can have them time. Or if you have an egg timer it works really good but that's more of a two to three minute timer for if you want to play longer rounds. The basic rules are: you're going to just write down either books, movies, and TV shows on little slips of paper. You're going to fold them up and put them in either a hat or a bag or something that you can pull from. Now, each team is going to have their own hat or bag because you're never going to choose from your own team's bag. You're going to choose from the other teams and they are going to choose from yours. So each team comes up with movies, TV shows and books, puts them in the bag, and when you draw from it you want to explain a few things. Now, you cannot speak, remember that. But let's say for example, I pull one and it's a TV show. So I'm going to show TV show by drawing a square. If it was a movie, I would do this, and if it's a book, I would show this. Then I'm going to say how many words it is. This one is four words, so I'm going to make sure I let them know it's four words and then I'm going to choose which word I'll going to start acting out. If I want to start with the first one, I'll do this. First word, and then I will show the action. if I want to show that it's something that rhymes with something else, or sounds like another word if I can't describe that exact word, I'll shake my ear or pull down my ear and that's "sounds like". Um, I think the best way to show you this is to actually do and example. So David, if you could pull one from the hat. We've already made some. David: Okay. Teri: You ready? Okay. Go ahead. It's a movie. It's two words. First word. It's a telescope. Ah, so you're looking far way. You're looking up into the sky. Sky. Sky blue. Night sky. Night? Night in the sky. Uh, planets. Planet Earth. No, stars! Stars! Star Trek. Star Wars! Alright. So we've got it. And again, try to make the actions big and physical and very specific. Dave did a great job.
