"Another mistake people tend to make when they're making New Year's Eve toasts is addressing people in the room, and that's really not what a New Year's Eve toast is about. You might pick and choose one person, or maybe two persons to address in the room. Primarily it would be perhaps the host, if you're not the host, or maybe the person who asked you to give the toast. But a New Year's Eve toast is not about talking to, and pointing out people in the crowd, and talking about what's coming up in the new year for them, or what was in the past. So and so had such a bad year; this year has to be better, or hey Jim; maybe you'll get over something this year, versus last year, or whatever. That's not what a New Year's Eve toast is about. A New Year's Eve toast ideally is a blanket statement that everyone in the room can relate to, and does not have to be addressed individually to any persons."
