How to Set Up a Board for a Non-Profit Organization

"Hi! This is Jim Goettler with Expert Village and this is a video about how to form and operate a non-profit organization. In this segment, I am going to touch on a very broad topic which is board development. Bringing people onto your board that you need and the community needs that so that your organization can do what it is set out to do. Chances are you started a small group of people maybe two or three people who are your founding board which is very usual. It's not unusual at all to start with a few number of people. As you progress and begin to develop ideas of what you really want to do, you find you need more people with specific skills. In other words if you are going to be dealing with real estate and buying property, you may want to get a Realtor on your board. If you are dealing with many legal issues, it only makes sense to bring a lawyer onto your board. If you are going to be dealing with arts and culture, it makes sense to bring someone in that community onto your board for their expertise, their contacts and their connections. Something not to overlook here is the need of the board to be able to raise money. A large part of what board of directors are about is the raising of the money for the organization to sustain. It is a very serious and very often overlooked part of board development. I strongly suggest that you incorporate that into your thinking.
