"On behalf of expertvillage.com, I'm Shelly with AA Callister in Salt Lake City, Utah and we are looking at how to purchase a winter horse blanket. There are a couple of things important to consider when purchasing a winter horse blanket and that is water resistant and waterproof and also is the blanket breathable. Now this is a duck blanket here and this one is just water resistant. Now what that means water resistant is it repels the water but not necessarily keeps the water from soaking through the blanket. So if you have a heavy storm, moisture will probably come through your blanket and get your horse wet. Whereas a waterproof blanket is going to keep out all of the moisture on the back of the horse so that is the difference between water resistant and water proof. So consider those in your area and weather when purchasing water resistant and waterproof. Now breathable, what breathable means is it going to allow your horse to breath. If he is out in the elements or if he is out playing and running around in a pasture and gets all sweaty, is it going to allow him to breathe and cool himself off? Because the bad thing is once your horse gets wet and you've got a blanket on him, he can't dry himself if it is not breathable and you can get him sick. So consider the difference between water resistant and waterproof and is it breathable. Do you need a blanket that is breathable when purchasing a winter blanket. "
