"Bearded Dragons have very strict requirements for temperature and humidity, like I had mentioned earlier. Now, I have three different types of lights here. This one here is an incandescent bulb, this is also, I call it his basking light. It's a tight beam. You can find these in your pet, local pet stores. You want to always make sure you get the desert type. You're local pet store personal will be able to direct you towards which ones are desert type. You just want to make sure you have a tight beam, because what this does is it directs the light, or the heat, down in a more concentrated area. So, more heat goes to one area. As you can see, he likes the heat right here, so he's trying to get at close as he can to this bulb. This light here is a infrared heat lamp. This is the heat I use at night. It is not, I use a low wattage for the evening time. They can withstand pretty low temperatures during the evening. So, I've used a low wattage infrared. This provides enough heat during the night for him to adequately warm up. I also have a strip light in the back here. This is a florescent tube. It's a full spectrum, and it's also a UVB tube. This mimics the sun's ultraviolet rays, which produce vitamin D in reptiles. And vitamin D is how you absorb the calcium. So, it's very important that you have some type of UVB source in your terrarium. These are called reflector domes, these metal, the fixtures that the bulbs are screwed in to, called reflector domes. They're purpose is basically to reflect all this heat that's coming off the bulb, down in to this area that it's directly over. So, these can get pretty hot, but they also have the ceramic base here, which can withstand very high wattages. So, it's safe to use even the highest wattage bulb you can find with these reflector domes. I have the cages set in a, pretty much, right in between the ground and the top of the cage here, right in the center, towards the basking area, so that I'm able to monitor whether or not his basking area is, is reaching the correct levels that he needs to survive. on 8/25/2008 You should have 2 temperature sensors in your terrarium - and you should also consider a IR temperature gun - it will read a more excact spot-temperature.
I would also used a terrarium with opening in front. Aquariums like this will heat up quickly, and the ventilation isn`t very good. At least you should consider to install a couple of computer fans on the top to suck out (not blow in) heated air. With a decent adapter you can choose how many rpm`s the fans shall spin.
I would also recommend you saying something about timers (if you use those) - to make a routine-day for the BD. All lights and heating devices should have a timer - this way the "sun comes up" 8 AM each day, and sets 10 PM.
