" Hi my name is Richard Revis I'm co-owner of Black Jungle Terrarium Supply and today on behalf of expertvillage.com we are discussing the proper culturing of fruit flies. At this point we are ready to start prepping the area for the actual culturing. The first you want to do is make sure your work surface is a nice smooth easily disinfected surface. If you don't have a surface like this you can use a disposable table cloth or even sheets of clean newspapers in order to culture on. But it is important to prevent any type of contamination to the cultures. You can use a 10% bleach solution and just slightly mist the surface and then wipe it down and allowing it to air dry. Doing this would help prevent any type of surface bacteria, fungus, and also any mites that might be present on the table from infecting the cultures. You also want to make sure that all of your culture materials whether it would be the funnels, the measuring cups, in the culture vessels itself are also properly cleaned and disinfected before use. Failure to follow any of these steps can result in contaminated cultures and failure of the culture itself. Once your area is nice and clean and disinfected, you want to lay out all of your materials to enable you to work quickly and smoothly in order to make sure that you are minimizing any contamination possible."
