Spring Tails As Food for Poisonous Dart Frogs

"Hi! My name is Richard Reavis. I am co-owner of Black Jungle Terrarium Supply and on behalf of expertvillage.com. Today we are discussing the feeding and supplementation of poison dart frogs. To continue on with our survey of feeder insects, I would like to now discuss the springtails. Springtails are a food item of which there are typically two different types that are commonly cultured; both tropical and temperament species are available but what we have found is that the temperaments breed much slower and are much more difficult to feed out to the insects than the tropicals. Tropicals are very easy to culture under warm humid conditions although they do not like nearly as much moisture as the temperaments species do. They are very tiny crustacean. You can probably barely make them out at best as tiny small white moving items on the screen. They are most suitable for use with very tiny metamorphs especially with some forms of the thumbnail species like the ventramaculatas or imitators. Although many of these species when the tadpoles are properly cared for will morph out right onto the fruit flies as well but some people still do like to culture them, have them readily available for their frogs if they are needed. Additionally, many larger species even something as large as tanktorious do also enjoy the addition to the diet. It can be really funny actually to watch the tanktorius eating something that you can’t see but obviously they can and with the ease of the tropical springtails can be cultured, there is really no reason to not add them to your variety of insects that you are offering your frogs."
