"Hi my name is Sarah and this is Halibut, and I am one of the exotic technicians here at Extra Care Animal Hospital, and on behalf of Expert Village.com, I am going to provide you with some helpful information on owning a rabbit. Another important part of taking care of your bunny is to spay or neuter your rabbit once he or she is old enough. There are some pet stores out there that are selling rabbits that are already spayed and neutered. It is important to make sure that you know whether your rabbit is spayed or neutered when you get it. People always think “cute and fuzzy bunnies,” but intact, older rabbits can be very aggressive. Just like with a cat or a dog, an intact male rabbit will want to urinate to mark its territory. Female rabbits can become very aggressive. We recommend spaying and neutering generally around 6 months of age. You generally want to have them spayed and neutered younger because the structures, blood vessels, etc. are much smaller, and it is a much easier surgery. In addition to the behavioral issues, it is extremely important for female rabbits to be spayed because they have an extremely high incidence of uterine cancer once they are older. Uterine cancer is one of the most aggressive kinds of cancer out there, and it is extremely hard to treat.
