How Train Your Rabbit to Use a Litter Box

Something else you can choose to do is litter box train your rabbit. Yes, rabbits can be litter boxed trained just like a cat. Rabbits would not naturally go in litter box like a cat would, but you can train them. If you have your rabbit in a cage, in order to litter box train it you want to put down newspaper, and then anything that the rabbit does outside of the litter box…if they defecate, you can sweep them up with a small dustpan and put them in the litter box. If they urinate on the newspaper, you tear out that part of the newspaper that has some urine on it and put it in the litter box. The kind of litter that you want to use should be a pelleted recycled newspaper product, or they have different various pelleted pine litter products. These are generally marketed for cats, but they can also be used for rabbits. You do not want to use wood shavings in the litter box. You do not want to use any regular clay clumping cat litters, as these can cause respiratory irritation in your rabbit. You should also place some timothy hay in your rabbits litter box, as this will encourage them to sit in there, eat the hay and take care of their business while in the litter box. While human beings find that a somewhat gross behavior, for rabbits, it is completely normal, because they are always eating and always defecating. It is a totally normal behavior for them. If you consistently keep doing this, within a week or so, you should have a litter box trained rabbit.
