"Hi my name is Sarah and this is Halibut, and I am one of the exotic technicians here at Extra Care Animal Hospital, and on behalf of Expert Village.com, I am going to provide you with some helpful information on owning a rabbit. If you choose to keep your rabbit in a cage, you should use some sort of recycled newspaper bedding. There are several different ones available out on the market, and they are much less irritating to rabbit’s sensitive respiratory tract than wood shavings would be. We do not recommend using wood shavings, as we have seen these to cause respiratory problems in rabbits. If you choose to keep your rabbit in a cage, it should be a solid bottom cage. It should not be in an aquarium, as these do not provide adequate ventilation. Rabbits that we see are kept on wire bottom cages tend to have an incidence of sore hocks, which is where they get abscesses on the bottom of their back feet from being on the wire for too long, and so it is very important to have a solid bottom cage for your rabbit.
