All Videos In The Series, "How to Care for Syrian Hamsters"
In the wild, the Syrian or Golden hamster is endangered, but as a pet it thrives as one of the most popular domesticated members of the rodent family. The tiny pets only grow to be approximately 5-7 inches in length, and can live for up to three years, if properly cared for. Their sweet and curious demeanor makes them desirable pets, and more attractive than other rodents because their tails are not visible. They are, however, extremely territorial, and great care is required when raising more than one, especially if the sexes are mixed. In this free video clip series, our expert will outline the basics of Syrian hamster care, demonstrating the types of supplies and equipment a pet owner will need, proper methods for bathing and feeding, as well as information on common illnesses the hamsters can suffer from. Discussions on free roaming hamster care is included.
"Hi! My name is Sarah. I work at Extra Care Animal Hospital. I am one of the technicians there. I am here at Petland at Pembroke Pines today to tell you a little bit about hamster care on behalf of Expert Village.com. Hamsters are interesting little rodents with cheek pouches and short stubby tails. They have gained popularity as pets in the last few years and were originally introduced to the United States in the 1930’s. The hamster that you have seen in most of the pet stores is the Syrian or Golden Hamster, and that animal’s wild habitat extends through the Middle East and southeastern Europe. Since their domestication, several color and hair coat varieties of the Syrian Hamster have arisen through selective breeding. The three groups which now exist include: the common golden hamster, colored, short-haired fancy hamster, and the long hair teddy bear hamster. If you would like any more information about the animal hospital that I work at, you can go to www.extracareanimalhospital.net, and if you would like anymore information about Petland in Pembroke Pines, you can go to www.petland.com."
