"Hi! My name is Sarah and I am here at Extra Care Animal Hospital in Davey, Florida today and on behalf of Expert Village.com, I am going to educate you a little bit about owning a guinea pig. As I previously mentioned, Vitamin C supplementation is very important for the health of your guinea pig. Unlike most mammals, guinea pigs cannot manufacture their own Vitamin C; therefore, they have to receive it from an outside source. Pellet guinea pig diets do provide some Vitamin C but unfortunately Vitamin C is not very stable after the manufacturing process and as soon as 6 weeks after manufacturing, most guinea pig pellets have lost approximately half of their Vitamin C content. There are several different ways to supplement the Vitamin C in your guinea pig’s diet. One way is to get an ascorbic acid syrup or Vitamin C syrup from your local health food store. You want to put 50 milligrams of Vitamin C syrup in one cup of water and use that as your guinea pig’s soul source of drinking water and change that every day. It is very important that if you are using this method, that you change the water every day because the Vitamin C is not stable for more than 24 hours in the water. One of the easiest ways to supplement your guinea pig’s Vitamin C is with these tablets from Oxbow Company. Each tablet contains 50 milligrams of Vitamin C which is your guinea pig’s recommended daily intake. You simply offer them one tablet once a day as a treat and you are done with your Vitamin C supplementation for your guinea pig.
