Pneumonia & Hair Loss in Pet Guinea Pigs

"Hi, my name is Sarah, and I am here at Extra Care Animal Hospital in Davey, Florida, today, and on behalf of Expert Village.com, I am going to educate you a little bit about owning a guinea pig. Other common problems that we see include pneumonia. Guinea pigs generally that we see with pneumonia come from living in an aquarium with improper bedding and not enough ventilation. Other problems that we see include bacterial enteritis, or a bacterial infection in the intestines, which is generally related to improper diet. Another problem that we see commonly is bacterial infection of the feet. Generally these are from inadequate cleaning of the cage or sometimes from guinea pigs that live on a wire bottom cage. Finally another problem that we see in guinea pigs is hair loss, which is secondary to lice or mites. If you feel like your guinea pig has any of these problems, it is very important that you get him or her into a qualified exotic mammal veterinarian as soon as possible. If you ever feel like your guinea pig is just not acting right or skips its favorite treat or anything that raises a concern with you, it is very important that you get your guinea pig to an exotic mammal veterinarian as soon as possible. It’s not like a cat or a dog where you could say oh well, he or she skipped a meal. She’ll probably be fine. With these, guys because they do tend to be a little smaller and the herbivores do tend to be a little more delicate. It is very important that if you feel anything is wrong to get them to a vet as soon as possible. It is better to get them in and have everything be fine. Have it be nothing versus waiting too long and possibly endangering the life of your pet.
