"Hi, my name is Sarah, and I am here at Extra Care Animal Hospital in Davey, Florida, today, and on behalf of Expert Village.com, I am going to educate you a little bit about owning a guinea pig. You should provide a good clean bedding. One good option is Care Fresh, which is a recycled newspaper product and is a very clean dust free bedding for your guinea pig. Wood shavings are not allowed as an option for bedding for your guinea pig as they do tend to be very dusty. Cedar shavings can actually put off fumes that are toxic to the liver of small animals. Therefore, you should never ever use cedar shavings for any small animal bedding. You should change your guinea pig’s bedding out about once a week. The entire cage should be cleaned at that time. You can use either a mild dish soap and hot water or a diluted bleach solution being one part bleach to 30 parts water. Whatever you decide to use to clean your guinea pig’s cage, you want to make sure that you rinse very very thoroughly afterwards and do not leave any residue of cleaner on the cage once you are done. Your guinea pig’s cage should be dried very thoroughly before putting new bedding in.
