"Hi, my name is Sarah, and I am here at Extra Care Animal Hospital in Davey, Florida, today, and on behalf of Expert Village.com, I am going to educate you a little bit about owning a guinea pig. As far as your guinea pig’s diet goes, your guinea pig should always have fresh food and water available. Your guinea pig may have timothy hay at all times. The timothy hay can either be placed in a rack or hung on the side of the cage or the timothy hay can simply be placed on the floor of the cage. The timothy hay should always be checked to make sure that it is clean and dry. Another important part of your guinea pig’s diet is green leafy vegetables. You should always wash these before offering then to your guinea pig to make sure that you get any pesticide or any other residues off of them. Green leafy vegetables you can offer your guinea pig include kale, green leaf lettuce, any of your dark leafy greens. You want to avoid things like iceberg lettuce, as they just do not offer a lot of nutrition for your guinea pig. You want to stay away from things like onions, chives or anything in the onion family, as they can be toxic. Another important part of your guinea pig’s diet is a good quality pellet formulated specifically for guinea pigs. You want to make sure that it is timothy based pellet, and you want to make sure that it has vitamin C in it. Vitamin C supplementation is very important for the health of your guinea pig, and I will be addressing Vitamin C supplementation in just a moment.
