"Hi, my name is Sarah, and I am here at Extra Care Animal Hospital in Davey, Florida, today, and on behalf of Expert Village.com, I am going to educate you a little bit about owning a guinea pig. Through a selective breeding, there are a number of common guinea pig breeds that you will see. There are four main breeds, and the first one that we see most commonly is the English, or short-haired guinea pig. They have a uniformly short hair coat and come in a variety of different colors. This particular coloration is called an albino. You can see it has white hair and pink eyes. Another common breed of a guinea pig is the Abyssinian who has a uniformly short hair coat like this, but they have whirls or rosettes all over their body. Another common breed is these silky guinea pigs that have medium length silky hair. They do require a little more upkeep, such as daily brushings and grooming, and the final breed you see sometimes but not as commonly are the Peruvian Guinea Pigs. They have very long silky hair and you do not see them as commonly because they do require a lot of upkeep. Their very long hair coat requires a lot of daily and gluing. on 8/2/2008 In the US there are 13 breeds and over 40 varieties. That guinea pig is NOT an albino, there is no such thing as an albino guinea pig. Its proper name is REW or red eyed white.
