" Hi! My name is Sarah I am coming to you today from Pet Land in Pembroke Pines, Florida and on behalf of expertvillage.com I am going to speak with you a little bit about choosing a pet snake. Another consideration when you are thinking about getting a snake as a pet is whether or not you are prepared to properly house the snake while you may only spend $25 to $100 to $200 on your snake you should plan on spending 3-4 times that on getting proper housing. Snakes are not inexpensive to house and while a small aquarium such as this may do for a snake in the beginning you will eventually need to move to larger and more secure housing once your snake has grown to its full adult size. You should be prepared to get larger housing that is much easier to clean which there are some injection moulded housing available on the Internet and at specialty reptile stores that can get somewhat pricey and you need to be prepared for that. Like I said while sub-setting your reptiles cage you should use newspaper or a cage carpet such as this substrate such as bark or sand can be ingested by your snake and cause an impaction. The carpet and newspaper is also much more sanitary as you can take the entire substrate medium out of the cage once a week completely clean the cage and replace a new substrate. Substrates such as sand and bark tend to encourage people to put off the cage cleaning as you can just remove the part of the bark or sand that is soiled and leave the remaining sand behind while this may remove the actual fecal material this leaves bacteria, food material, urates and moisture in the sand and bark which can lead to fungal infections, bacterial infections and number of other health problems.
