" Hi! My name is Sarah I am coming to you today from Pet Land in Pembroke Pines, Florida and on behalf of expertvillage.com I am going to speak with you a little bit about choosing a pet snake. Another consideration when deciding what kind of snake to get is what kind of prey species you are willing to feed your snake. Ball Pythons once they are older will have to eat small to medium sized rats, sometimes even large rats depending on the size of the snake and you as an owner have to be prepared to deal with that. We do not recommend feeding your snake live rats or mice once they are up to a size to eat these prey items and steadily recommend feeding them frozen thawed rats and mice. It is very important that you understand that you should not be feeding live mice and rats to your snake as this is a danger to their health. Live mice and rats very commonly will turn around and bite the snake as the snake is trying to feed on it and this will cause abscesses and this cause the snake to get septic but no matter what happens if your snake gets bitten by a rat or a mouse, it will get very sick. There are number of different sources to find frozen mice and rats to feed your pet snake. You can contact your reptile veterinarian, you can contact your local reptile club, you can also contact the pet store that you got your snake from and they may be able to find the source for frozen rodents. The good part about feeding frozen rodents to your snake is that the freezing process will kill off any parasites and parasite eggs that are commonly found in feeder mice and rats.
