"Hi! This is Sharon Booth with Goldenrod Performance Horses and we are representing Expert Village and how to exercise your horse by lunging. So first you need your lunge line, a good halter and a good safe arena to lunge in. Some people do lunge in an outer area but you need to make sure if the horse gets away, there is no way for it to get to the road or somewhere that it could be in danger. Lunging is a very exact art, so you need to learn from someone that is a professional at lunging and learn how to properly school your horse on a lunge line when you exercise them by lunging you don't have an accident of some kind. So lunging is basically on a long line going in a circle and they go in a run, trot and canter but it is a controlled exercise so you need to again, warm them up by walking, going into a trot and then a canter to warm up their muscles properly and then bringing them back down to a walk. Make sure you go both directions so that both sides of the horse get equal time and make them come to you or stand whichever you prefer. Or you are taught to go up and catch the horse after lunging to bring them back into their stall area. This way you can keep your horse properly exercised at least 45 minutes a day if you don't have a turn out area or if you can't ride that day. Thank you and have a very good day with your horse."
