"And of course, while we're talking about costs, that leads very well into talking about the diet for your new beginner lizard. Say if you're talking about a bearded dragon, okay, he's small now--little baby--doesn't seem like he's going to eat much. And as a baby, he's not going to eat that much, but when he's full-grown the diet is going to be pretty intensive. For the basis of the diet, of course, we'll be looking at crickets. Which, for a full-grown bearded dragon who's eating a good six dozen crickets a week is not out of control or unheard of. They're very, very gluttonous. Of course, you don't want that to be the only part of the diet. A varied diet is the best part of nutrition. So waxworms, which are like little grubs, are a important part, though they are fattening, so stay kind of stingy on those. And then, as he's small, mealworms are just fine as well, to help spice the diet up. Again, they're just little grubs--come here, there we go--little grubs, and then as he gets bigger into a full-grown adult, you can offer him giant mealworms, which are basically the larger versions of the standard mealworms. Again, these guys are live; they're just refrigerated, so they're kind of in a stasis mode right now. Not to mention the fact that you also have to give him salad on a daily basis. Bearded dragons do eat salad, and it's important for them to have that on a daily basis--they get a lot of moisture from it. So his overall food bill can add up pretty fast."
