Summary: Artists have many ways of transferring photographs into paintings. Learn some ideas for transferring your pet portrait to a canvas in this free painting video clip about how to make your own pet portrait.
"Different artists have different ways of transferring the inspiration for our painting onto the canvas. Some people can just look at a drawing like this, and immediately they'll start painting, no problem at all. Other artists will look at this, and they'll quickly sketch a representation. A real quick, just crude rendering, on the canvas just using pencil, or sometimes they'll also use like really thin layers of paint. Still other artists will use things like a light box. A light box allows you to first put the picture on top of the light box, and then turn it on. Once the light box is on, there'll be a light radiating through the picture, and it'll also make anything you put on top of the picture at least partially see-through. This includes canvas. So if you want, you can basically either put a picture on your light box, and then put the canvas over the light box, turn it on, and then you can quickly trace at least a road map of what your painting's going to be. I've seen again, artists do it all sorts of different ways. Also with a stretch canvas, if you look at the back of it, you can see here it's nice wood frame. Some people even tape a picture to the back, the inside of this, and then turn on the light box, put the canvas over it, and then draw through that way, which will allow for much more detailed drawings. It really depends on what you're going for. If the focus of this is, you know, pure art, a lot of people do their own drawing, their own painting. If you really want to focus more on the painting, I've also known artists who will do this basically to get their basic shapes, sizes, and relationships down quickly, so then they can move on to the fun of painting sooner."
